A very common dish in Turkish restaurants, shrimp güveç is a shrimp casserole baked in a tomato base with vegetables, and typically topped with melted cheese. It’s name comes from the small dish that it’s cooked in – a güveç is a small clay pot typically holding 1-2 servings. But if you don’t have a güveç, it’s not a problem! In fact, it’s easier to just cook it all in a big dish and eat it family style.
This version of this dish was made when we were experimenting at home. We didn’t have any melty cheese and I wanted to give feta cheese a shot. Not only did it definitely NOT disappoint, we now prefer it with feta cheese! (We typically buy Turkish feta cheese made with sheep’s milk, but I think it would work with most feta cheeses).
While delicious on its own, this dish is typically enjoyed with a starch – scoop it up with some bread, eat it with a side of rice or bulgar, it would even be delicious with pasta! Go nuts and customize to your liking.
Here’s what you need:
- ~1 pound of shrimp
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 yellow bell pepper
- 1 medium onion
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- ~1-½ cups of feta cheese
- ~1 tsp salt
- ~1 tsp black pepper
- 28 oz of crushed tomato
- 2-3 tbsp olive oil
Turn your oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit. Cut up all of your veggies & garlic and put into piles. In a large saute pan, add onion to heated olive oil and cook until fragrant (around 2 minutes). Add in garlic and cook for another minute before adding in bell peppers, crushed tomato, salt & pepper. When bubbling, add in shrimp and cook for 2 minutes.
Transfer everything into a large, oven safe dish (or separate into smaller dishes/güveç pots). Sprinkle feta cheese over the mixture, and bake for 10-15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and enjoy by itself, or with a starch of your choosing! Enjoy.
