We don’t like to waste food in our house, so I’m always looking for new ways to use leftovers. This recipe for “Kitchen Sink Fried Rice” is a very LOOSE recipe, in that it changes depending on what I have in the fridge, and the same will apply to you. It’s my favorite way to use leftover foods or veggies that need to be used before they go bad!
To start, having leftover rice is handy. You could make new rice to go with this recipe if you really had a craving for fried rice and had other foods you wanted to use up in your fridge.
In the above picture, I used leftover Turkish rice w/ vermicelli noodles, a little leftover stuffing I had for dumplings after I ran out of wrappers, sucuk (a seasoned Turkish sausage), plus additional ingredients listed below. You could include leftover stir-fry, fajitas, a veggie side dish or piece of meat that’s not enough for a meal but you still didn’t want to throw out.
Here’s the overall premise to this recipe:
- ~3-4 cups cooked rice (leftover or otherwise)
- Your choice of vegetables, or leftover dish with vegetables and/or meat in it
- Some kind of additional meat (salty meat is the best)
- 1 small onion
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- 1 carrot
- 2 green onions
- ~1 tsp salt
- ~½-1 tsp black pepepr
- Optional: 1 tbsp soy sauce
- Optional: 1 tbsp sesame oil
In a wok or large frying pan, cook your onions and garlic until they are just starting to brown. Add in your remaining vegetables/other dish with vegetables in it and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Next, add additional meat and cook for another 2 minutes, followed by the rice. Add in salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
If you want your fried rice to have more of an “Asian” flavor, add in the soy sauce and sesame oil at the very end.
